Utica University dedicates patio and pergola in memory of late student John Paul "JP" Ramel

A plaque dedicating the campus pergola in honor of JP Ramel is unveiled.

"JP Ramel’s legacy was built long before he left us. We see evidence of it in every corner of this campus. For this, we owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude."

During the 2023 Homecoming Weekend, the Utica University community took time to honor the memory of John Paul “JP” Ramel by dedicating a patio and pergola in his name.

Located right outside of Thurston Hall, the space is especially meaningful because it was designed and built by JP's former classmates.

Last April, JP passed away from a sudden illness. He was a senior at Utica University on track to graduate with honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in Construction Management.

"This beautiful new space on campus, created by the hands and hearts of JP’s classmates and dedicated in his memory, is a vestige of the legacy he leaves on campus," said President Todd Pfannestiel. "But make no mistake: JP Ramel’s legacy was built long before he left us. We see evidence of it in every corner of this campus. For this, we owe him a tremendous debt of gratitude."

Not only did JP excel academically, he was also the president of the Construction Management Club on campus and a volunteer firefighter in his hometown of Plumstead Township, Pennsylvania.
