Utica College, American Cancer Society to Host Lecture On Cancer Research, Care
Dr. Luke Peppone to speak on “Attacking Cancer from Every Angle: Research and Hope”
One of the most devastating things a person can be told is that they’ve been diagnosed with cancer, yet one out of every three Americans will hear those words in their lifetime. But thanks to the tireless dedication of researchers and caregivers, there is hope.
Utica College’s chapter of Colleges Against Cancer (CAC) and The American Cancer Society will host renowned researcher Dr. Luke Peppone on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. in UC’s Carbone Family Auditorium in the Economic Crime, Justice Studies and Cybersecurity Building. His lecture is titled “Attacking Cancer from Every Angle: Research and Hope.”
A faculty member at the University of Rochester, Peppone is an associate professor at various departments including the department of surgery, department of orthopedics, and the Cancer Center Institute. He earned his doctoral degree in Epidemiology and Community from Social and Preventative Medicine at SUNY Buffalo. His research focuses on the use of nutritional supplementation and exercise to treat the symptoms and side effects of cancer and its related treatment and has investigated various side effects including cancer-treatment-induced bone loss, arthralgia, fatigue, cognitive difficulties, and sleep problems.
Peppone has authored or co-authored more than 30 peer-reviewed journal publications and is an ad-hoc reviewer for more than 10 journals. He is also very involved with the cancer advocacy community and has given numerous local and national presentations on a variety of cancer-related topics.
The lecture is free and open to the public. A question-and-answer session and reception will immediately follow the presentation; donations to benefit cancer research will be accepted at that time. The lecture will complement the Great American Smoke-Out event to be held earlier in the day, kicking off team registration for Relay For Life, an on-campus fundraising event for cancer research held in April 2020.
